While I’ve never played the original TA, I’ve played a lot of its ‘spiritual successor’, Supreme Commander, and while that’s a great game, particularly the Forged Alliance expansion, I honestly prefer Kingdoms.

Even that was never the top dog in the RTS game, while very critically acclaimed, it was following up the gigantic Command & Conquer. I suspect that many readers might not be familiar with a 1999 game that’s always sat in the shadow of its more popular predecessor, Total Annihilation. Total Annihilation: Kingdoms: What is it? If you’ve never played this game before, look into obtaining it, it shouldn’t cost you much, and you’ll have two excellent RTS campaigns to play through, as well as an entertaining multiplayer scene should you happen to have friends… unfortunately LAN parties only as the online servers went under many years ago.

I can get it to run on almost any PC, so pretty much every PC I’ve had, I’ve installed it and had fun playing through its campaign, and so I’m going to detail how one gets through its campaign that now, in the current iteration of my latest playthrough, seems simple to me, yet I have memories of it being very hard. Along with a couple of other games, it cemented RTS and strategy in general as being one of my favourite games and despite its age, it remains so to this day. Which is apparently not great, though I disagree. One of the first games I ever played properly was Total Annihilation: Kingdoms.
